The latest live-call poll conducted for Minnesota Public Radio and the Humphrey Institute shows Al Franken making headway in his challenge to Norm Coleman for the U.S. Senate seat formerly held by Paul Wellstone. Of the 763 Minnesota voters phoned during the period August 7 – 17, 2008, 41% said they would vote for Franken, compared to 40% who favored Coleman, 8% who said they planned to vote for Independence party candidate Dean Barkley and 11% who were as yet undecided.
Considering that Coleman is the incumbent, this is good news for Franken whose campaign continues to forge ahead steadily. Larry Jacobs, a political scientist at the University of Minnesota who directed the poll, said “the broader political environment is very challenging to Coleman.”
At a recent fundraiser for senate districts 47, 48, 49 and 51, Franni Franken reminded voters that polls provide snapshots, and the Franken v. Coleman race is neck-and-neck…which is where the voters come in. She also said:
“Obama needs 60 senators to bring about change [and] we need Al in the senate to work with Amy Klobuchar and retore Minnesota to the powerhouse it has been…and we will see Minnesota come to the forefront and be a leader of the nation as we were during the time of Hubert Humphrey.”

Al Franken and Norm Coleman faced off in Redwood County yesterday at Farmfest, an annual event that has been bringing agricultural workers, neighbors and political leaders together for 27 years. The festival offers information on ag-related programs and technological advances, including exhibits and demonstrations, and provides a forum for policy discussions.
Independent hopefuls Dean Barkley and Steve Williams were also on the panel of the U.S. Senate Candidates’ Forum on Agriculture and Rural Issues, but Franken and Coleman took center stage. Understandably, energy was one of the main issues to be discussed, and Franken took the opportunity to reveal Coleman’s ties to Big Oil. Since 2002, Norm Coleman has received more than $245,000 from the oil and gas industry (source: Center for Responsive Politics).
Unable to refute the receipt of oil money, Coleman responded by saying he has voted to help farmers. However, Coleman supported CAFTA which would have hurt sugar beet farmers, and has actually voted to lower payments to dairy farmers. Further, it has only been during the past two years that Coleman’s senate votes have digressed much from the Bush Administration’s favored policies (source: WCCO TV). Both candidates supported the most recent farm bill.
At one point, Coleman said, “These are my people,” referring to the agricultural crowd. As a member of the Senate’s Agricultural Committee, Coleman should, indeed, have had a major advantage at the debate, but Franken spoke as an informed – and concerned – denizen of a state whose economy depends on its agriculture.
The next debate is as yet unscheduled. Senate candidates typically hold a debate during the Minnesota State Fair. Al Franken is amenable to the idea, but Norm Coleman has expressed a preference to forego it.

On August 5, 2008 RandomHouse/Doubelday will release the much-anticipated novel, The Gargoyle, by Canadian author, Andrew Davidson. The debut has received more praise (follow links to The New Yorker and more below) than criticism (which comes from Entertainment Weekly, a publication whose front page boasts stories about the movie “The Mummy,” Christina Applegate’s cancer and Nicole Kidman’s “steamy Australia.)
According to the Washington Post, The Gargoyle:
“is a story for people who like their literary entertainment well done…Following close behind David Wroblewski’s The Story of Edgar Sawtelle and Brunonia Barry’s The Lace Reader, The Gargoyle is another in this summer’s extraordinary series of million-dollar debuts from unknown writers that combine elements of mystery and mysticism.”
(Incidentally, having read and loved The Gargoyle myself, that makes me want to move Wroblewski and Barry to the top of my TBR pile.)
Part of the buzz surrounding the book can be attributed to its addictive companion website, Burned by Love, which now boasts a virally exploding following. When I first visited the site, there were fewer than 20 “burns” compared to today’s 155.
Also contributing to the buzz is a positive review by the Washington Post, who is also hosting a live Q&A chat with Andrew Davidson. The author will be online taking questions and comments on Tuesday, August 5 at 1:00 p.m. ET. Click here to leave a question or join the chat.
